Bring on the Terminal Illness, Baby!

I love the Lifetime network. Right now, Steel Magnolias is on. This is my favorite chick flick, because it's like the ULTIMATE chick flick.... all other chick flicks bow down before it and cower in its almighty presence!!! If this movie doesn't make you break down into hysterical sobs & hysterical giggles every 10 minutes, than you obviously have no soul. Or you're way more sophisticated than me. Whichever.

My favorite thing is the character names: Truvy, Clairee, Shelby, M'Lynn, Ouiser Boudreaux. Where do people have names like this?!? I've met a couple people here and there with names like that, but they're mixed in with "Jennifer"s and "Kate"s along the way. It's like the filmmakers didn't think we'd believe it was the South unless EVERY character had the super Southern names.

Speaking of being Southern... according to this "just for fun" dialect test I found from [info]anne_jumps, I am 53% Southern - Right on the Mason-Dixon Line. Wow, how did that happen? Except for always saying "y'all" I don't have the slightest hint of a southern accent. OR DO I? Ack! Now I feel like I should do a phone post and a poll to see what, um, y'all think. Heh.

You don't have a southern accent. At least, compared to me. I'm willing to believe that I sound more southern than you! *g*

Dude, you sound WAY more southern than me. How exactly did that work out? Maybe because you're from a more rural area? I have no idea.

Well, you're originally from New York and my family is a bunch of farmers, ergo - I sound more southern. :)

You know what's funny? The first summer I came back to New York after spending the year here, my extended family thought I had a southern accent. I said maybe 3 vaguely southern expressions and 'y'all' - and I probably got them from a tv show, not regionally - but my relatives SWORE I sounded different. It totally freaked me out. Maybe that's why I'm so sensitive to people thinking I'm southern!

BTW, the Wiki article on American English accents is entirely too fascinating. Because I'm a huge fucking GEEK.

I got 63% Dixie...Just south of the Mason-Dixon Line....I'm midwestern though, so I guess that's close enough.

Ouiser Boudreaux

Oh my god, so that's how you spell the Shirley MacLaine character's name? I HAD NO IDEA.

Oh, and I love this movie. I don't care who makes fun of me for it, either. I love it.

Hee! I didn't know either, until I looked it up on Imdb.com. ;)

And heh, here i always spelled it Weezer.

And though i think this movie is a top contendor for the ultimate chick flick, i also think that Terms of Endearment is just nipping at its heels. With Fried Green Tomatoes coming up along the side, fast and furious ;)

That's how I used to spell it too, until I looked it up on imdb.com. :)

I should do a poll one of these days, Ultimate Chick Flick of All Time Eva OMG. I think Beaches would win in the end, but Terms and Tomatoes would be tied for 2nd place. Steel Magnolias is just MY personal ultimate chick flick... except, now that I think of it, The Joy Luck Club.

GAH! Too many choices. We need some current-century chick flicks, yo.
