We Do It In The Dark With Smiles On Our Faces
So, [info]ktnb81 said she might be interested in getting into bandom. So I thought I'd upload a couple bandom albums for her, and link her to some bandom resources. I ended up going a bit overboard. Somehow Pete is to blame.

So what exactly is bandom? For my purposes, it refers mainly to the Fueled By Ramen/Decaydance artists, or bands that are connected to Pete Wentz, as well as My Chemical Romance and The Academy Is.... This post does not cover all the artists in bandom, just a handful that I happen to be obsessed with at the present time.

So, Katie, you wanted to get into bandom? First you should check out some of these handy-dandy bandom primers.

Download Link: SendSpace
Tracklisting: Wikipedia.com Listing
Sample Tracks: Taxi Driver (the song where Travis name-checks FOB and like, every band ever), Cupid's Chokehold (their big hit single with the Supertramp sample)

Artist: My Chemical Romance
Album: Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge
Download Link: SendSpace
Tracklisting: Wikipedia.com Listing
Sample Tracks: I'm Not Okay (I Promise), To The End
Comments: The album that rocketed them to success. Most memorable for spawning several videos that became AU fanfic universes.

Artist: My Chemical Romance
Album: The Black Parade
Download Link: SendSpace
Tracklisting: Wikipedia Article
Sample Tracks: I Don't Love You, Teenagers
Comments: As I mentioned when I uploaded this for my "Best of 2007" post, this was like my soundtrack to last year.

Artist: Panic (!) at the Disco
Album: A Fever You Can't Sweat Out
Download Link: SendSpace
Tracklisting: Wikipedia.com Listing
Sample Tracks: I Write Sins Not Tragedies, Build God, Then We'll Talk

Artist: Panic (!) at the Disco
Album: Pretty. Odd.
Download Link: SendSpace
Tracklisting: Wikipedia.com Listing
Sample Tracks: That Green Gentleman, Behind the Sea
Comments: Panic's long awaited second album. This is radically different from "Fever", with lots of Beatles and 60's rock influences. (There's actually been wank about the Beatles comparisons. Whatever, fandom.) As much as I love "Fever", I think this album is a thousand times better.

Artist: The Academy Is...
Album: Almost Here
Download Link: SendSpace
Tracklisting: Wikipedia.com Listing
Sample Tracks: Black Mamba
Comments: I'll admit, I haven't listened to this as much as I've listened to Santi. But it's still a good cd.

Artist: The Academy Is...
Album: Santi
Genre: Rock
Download Link: SendSpace
Tracklisting: Wikipedia.com Listing
Sample Tracks: We've Got a Big Mess On Our Hands, LAX to O'Hare
Comments: William Beckett is so very pretty. And hey, he makes good music too!

Artist: Various Artists
Album: OST: Snakes on a Plane
Download Link: SendSpace
Tracklisting: Wikipedia.com Listing
Sample Tracks: Cobra Starship - Snakes On A Plane (Bring It)
Comments: Featuring like, all of bandom. This soundtrack is a thousand times better than the actual movie, cheesy fun though it is.

:: MISC SONGS ::

++ Cobra Starship - Billie Jean (Michael Jackson cover)

++ Fall Out Boy - Dead On Arrival (acoustic)
++ Fall Out Boy - The Hand of God (World Cup 1986)
++ Patrick Stump - So Sick (Ne-Yo cover)
++ Patrick Stump - Let's Get In On (live Marvin Gaye cover)
++ Fall Out Boy - Sugar, We're Goin' Down (acoustic)
++ Fall Out Boy - Our Lawyer Made Us Change The Name Of This Song So We Wouldn't Get Sued (stripped)

++ My Chemical Romance & The Used - Under Pressure (David Bowie & Queen cover)

++ Panic at the Disco - Nine In The Afternoon
++ Panic at the Disco - We're So Starving
++ Panic at the Disco - The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide Is Press Coverage (AOL live sessions)
++ Panic at the Disco - The Weight (The Band cover)
++ Panic at the Disco - Tonight, Tonight (Smashing Pumpkins cover)
++ Panic at the Disco - Round Here (Counting Crows cover)
++ Panic at the Disco - Karma Police (Radiohead cover) - this is actually an AWFUL cover (seriously, SO BAD OMG), but I'm uploading it cause it's good for the LULZ.

Next, have some videos!

:: iPod Videos ::

Here's some iPod videos I happened to have available. Note: I actually have way more, but they're in protected iTunes format. I like to buy their videos off iTunes because (a) the quality is a thousand times better than you get ripping off YouTube and (b) it alleviates some of my guilt for downloading all these bands' music for free.

Anyways, here's a couple videos. The quality ranges from good to okay to kind of shitty, but what are you gonna do. All these artists' videos are freely available on YouTube.

++ Cobra Starship - Bring It (Snakes on a Plane)
++ Cobra Starship - The City Is At War - pies!
++ Cobra Starship - Zip file of MTV reality show clips - the ones where Gabe gives us canon MPREG, among other stuff.

++ Fall Out Boy - Dead On Arrival - the quality for this is kind of terrible, sorry.
++ Fall Out Boy - Grand Theft Autumn/Where Is Your Boy
++ Fall Out Boy - Sugar We're Goin Down
++ Fall Out Boy - Dance, Dance
++ Fall Out Boy - Saturday Night Alive appearence - they perform Sugar & Dance Dance.
++ Fall Out Boy - Thnks Fr Th Mmrs - the one with the monkeys!
++ Fall Out Boy - The Take Over, The Break's Over - the one where they're in Hemmy's dream.

++ Pete Wentz - Goodnight Moon Trailer - Ahahahahahaha. Watching Pete act is very good for the LULZ.

++ My Chemical Romance - I'm Not Okay - the one where they're all in high school, and Frank kisses Gerard. *loves*
++ My Chemical Romance - Welcome To The Black Parade

Finally, Katie, you will want to check out fanfic. Your best bet is to check the del.icio.us bandslash tag - that's where I get 99% of all my fic. Also check out:

++ My bandslash tag on del.icio.us. Note: when I started organizing it, I put everything *but* Pete/Patrick under that tag. It made sense at the time. ::makes face::
++ So here's My Pete/Patrick recs / my Pete/Patrick tag on del.icio.us
++ [info]ficbyzee's Recs
++ [info]stepps's Bandslash AU, Frank/Gerard and Kidfic recs
++ Even more recs by [info]iamtheenemy!

I don't know if I should download Papercut Chronicles or not. I have about 60% of it downloaded from torrents, but there's usually only 1 seed up (or none! woe!) and I've been trying to get it for days. My stupid slow DSL. :( It would be so much faster to just get it here, but it's like scrapping all my computer's hard work. Like the little engine that could!

...yeah, I should just grab it here.

Well, [info]xanphibian linked over here.

I have a couple of friends in bandom, but I've never really gotten much into it. Probably because I don't have the music - my music tends to be obscure indie rock or British artist singles from fanmixes or Broadway or Broadway performers.

So. Just for curiosity's sake... why would you encourage me to join bandom? :)

Hi there!

Well, there's the superficial reason for getting into bandom: all the dudes (and ladies!) that make up these bands are SO SO PRETTY. See my photobucket albums or any of these picspams.

There's also the fact that it's genuinely good music. At first I only liked Fall Out Boy - their blend of pop-punk reeled me in like nothing since Green Day. When I first saw a MCR video (for "I'm Not Okay") I thought they were slightly ridiculous and took themselves way too seriously... but then I started to listening to them, and found I really liked them. With bands like Cobra Starship, I got into them by seeing them support FOB in concert; they put on such a great live show that I had to get the album. With Panic, I heard "I Write Sins" on the radio and liked it, so I had to download the rest of their stuff. You get the idea.

The other reason to get into this fandom is the spectacular fic. I'd only occasionally read Real Person Fic before - mostly for the Lord of the Rings people, back in 2003 - but I'd always felt really squicky about it; with this fandom, the RPS is practically canon. The boys are all over each other constantly and forever talking about how much they love each other - some of them even incorporate kissing/rubbing up against each other into their stage shows. It's like, beyond awesome.

But the biggest reason for getting into this fandom? The people. I can honestly say I've never met nicer people than in this fandom, and there's surprisingly little wank (at least, compared to some of the other fandoms I've been in).

Oh god. When this post first went up I downloaded the Cobra Starship and Panic! albums I didn't have. And I ended up reading some random fic links, and not gonna lie, it was just for the lulz. And the lulz it brought, at first. But somehow ... 48 hours have passed, and now I am inhaling these epic Pete/Patrick and Ryan/Brendon fics. Me, who thought that Pete Wentz was FOB's lead singer until yesterday! The only reason I even knew his freaking name is because of his penis pictures that assaulted my eyes when I was trying to download a torrent last year!

And now I'm reading these 10,000-word fics about people whose faces I still can't always attach to names - and, in the case of Fall Out Boy, whose MUSIC I DON'T REALLY EVEN LIKE beyond the camp factor!!! (Well, except for This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race. But that's just because they have reached new heights of bravado in their choice of metaphors. Mostly.)

I listen to folk! Americana! Brazilian electronica! And, apparently, I read EROTICA ABOUT EVERY 13-YEAR-OLD'S FAVORITE BAND! My brain cannot process this!! It's Brendon Urie's fault, he looks like Gael Garcia Bernal, what was I supposed to do? WHEN WILL THE SHAME PASS?

Alternately, where can I find people to share my shame with. To help me cope.

HAHAHAHAHA WELCOME TO THE INSANITY!!!

I think I started out reading fic for the lulz too, and to my surprise it was FUCKING HOT.

LOL, I totally downloaded those pics of Pete's penis before I'd downloaded any of their music, because I am a whore for naked celeb pics. Actually a lot of people I know got into the fandom purely on the merits of Pete's penis. It's magical in that way.

You will come to like the music, I promise you. When I first heard My Chemical Romance, I thought they were pretentious emo bastards who took themselves way too seriously, but then I got The Black Parade and actually gave it a listen, and BOOM I was sucked in. Now they're one of my favorite bands ever! Weird.

I would recommend checking out some of the communities listed on this post in [info]newbieguide - although, warning, a lot of those communities tend to be made up of squealing teenies. Also, check out some of the bandom friending memes, and [info]foxxcub's recent Bandom Love Meme, which is 7 pages of squee on how awesome these bands and the fandom is. :)
