<lj:music>John Lennon - Instant Karma!</lj:music>

[Apparently nothing says "Happy Christmas" like fic recs. Yes.]

Way back in March 2009, I first asked my flist, "Should I try this show called Battlestar Galactica?" A couple people told me no, because the show was so depressing I would want to kill myself (hee) but most said, "OMG LUNA YESSSSSSSSSSSS". I was intrigued and added the first season to my Netflix queue. I watched the miniseries and thought, "Okay, this is a cool show, but I could take it or leave it". I slowly started making my way through the series via Netflix. I liked the show, and appreciated the hotness of the actors (especially Katee Sackhoff and Jamie Bamber, and wouldn't it be awesome if those two got together on the show?) but I wasn't totally sold. It took me months and months to get through the first two seasons. Sometime around the end of Season 2.5 something changed - it was probably the episode "Scar", in which Starbuck and Apollo almost hooked up. I started really caring about these characters and this silly little space show.

Then I got into Season 3, and there was all the stuff on New Caprica with the Resistance and all that, and suddenly I was all like "I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS SHOW GOOD LORD". I think I made it through all 6 discs of Season 3 in 2 weeks.

When I saw the episode "Unfinished Business", that was it for me - I went from thinking the Kara/Lee pairing would be hot together to going "THESE TWO MUST GET MARRIED AND HAVE BABIES OMG YES". At some point (probably about when I got spoiled for the ending of the show, dammit) I realized it would never happen in canon, because it's just not that kind of show - the writers like breaking our hearts far too much. Not just that, it's not realistic for the type of characters we're dealing with. But, hey, I don't exactly think Pete Wentz and Patrick Stump are going to get married and have dark eyed red haired babies, but that doesn't stop me from reading a million FOB mpreg fics. I like my denial, okay?

Aaaaaaaaaaanyways, yes. So, knowing that my two pet characters would probably never be happy together on the show, I decided to start looking for fanfic. And I discovered something: BSG ficcers like breaking my heart almost as much as the BSG show writers. Frak! In all my various fandoms - Buffy, LoTR, Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Bandslash, etc - I've NEVER seen so much angsty fic. But it's okay, because they usually also give me porn along with the angst. Yay porn!

So, here's some of the Kara/Lee fics I have recently discovered. Please note:

1) A lot of these fics were written like 5 years ago, so you've probably already read them. But they're new to me, so, like, sorry about that.

2) I always refer to this pairing as Kara/Lee instead of Lee/Kara. That's because Starbuck always goes first and is always on top. Hee.

3) For whatever reason, the Pilots! fandom seems to be quite vanilla (aka kink free), all things considered - especially when I contrast it to my most recent fandom, bandom, which is rife with genderswap, foursomes, wingfic, facials, etc etc. I've talked to taragel and she seems to think the vanilla is because there's so much angst to work through with Kara & Lee, there's no room for kink. Hmmmm.

~*~ Oh, and a final thing: If you're the author of one of these fics and would prefer not to be on my recs list, just drop me a comment or an email at lunalore[at]gmail.com & I'll happily take you off. Mwah! ~*~

++ 10 Times Lee Adama Belonged to Her by daphnaea, rated PG-13.
Summary: The story of a relationship in ten paragraphs
Spoilers/Time Frame: Through 2x18
Status: Complete, one shot
Luna Says: Favorite line, from #7 - his glance flickers across her face and he says "Kara" the way a man in the desert says "water" and it occurs to her that maybe she's his home, too. This is a short but there's beautiful longing and wanting, and the smut is fabulous.

++ A Winning Strategy by buckbeakbabie, rated NC-17.
Summary: "Getting married isn't going to solve the problem, you know," Lee pointed out. "It'll probably just make them more pissed at us. We could get in a lot of trouble". "Then we'll have to have the honeymoon in the brig. It'll be kinky."
Spoilers/Time Frame: AU after "Home II"
Status: Complete, one shot
Luna Says: Far and away my favorite of the "Secret Marriage Fics" I've found recced here. Okay, in this fic someone on Galactica is writing a series of bad romance novel-esque stories about "Vee" and "Mara", who are obviously based on Lee and Kara. There's purple prose and bad grammar and anatomically impossible sex scenes, and in general it's the funniest thing ever. I haven't LOLd so hard in ages. Plus, there's a happy ending!

++ Absolution on Airplanes by i_am_girlfriday, rated PG.
Summary: None given
Spoilers/Time Frame: Through "Kobol's Last Gleaming"
Status: Complete, on shot
Luna Says: Five ways Lee could have discovered Kara called out his name while she was with Baltar. In my world, this is how Season 4.5 actually went. Then a wave of guilt pulls her under. She expunges the word ‘married’ from her mental vocabulary.
Spoilers/Time Frame: Pre-series and up to Season 1 "Home"
Status: Complete, two parts
Luna Says: Doesn't ignore the whole Kara/Zak aspect, which I appreciate. Shows Kara & Lee hopelessly pining for each other despite them both loving Zak, and goes into Kara's guilt about her "killing" Zak. These two are both ridiculously fucked up in this fic, which is apt because they're both ridiculously fucked up in the series too.

++ Artemis Rising by stars_like_dust, rated R.
Summary: The author lists as her summary: The Word document for this was titled "Academy pilots go on a beach holiday and there is outmaking" for about a year. Which took me about 4 hours - once I started reading this fic, I couldn't put it down. Also, this fic managed to do something damn near impossible - make me actually like Gaius Baltar. Especially at the holidays.

Here's how it works: You comment with your username, and then people will comment ANONYMOUSLY with things they love about you. If you don't want to comment anonymously, you don't have to (I know LJ's "verify you are a human" system is annoying) but commenting anonymously is more fun, because then everyone gets to guess who said what about them.

Feel free to pimp this all over the place so we can get lots of fun participation going!!!

This is priceless.

++ Ewwww, Adama puking all over himself. That brings back unpleasant personal memories. Gah.

++ "Honey I'm starting to like your brother". Okay now I must read a hundred pre-mini Lee's-in-love-with-his-brother's-girlfriend angst fest fics.

++ Ooh Kara and Lee are gonna get drunk together <strike>and then frak like bunnies</strike> AHEM.

++ Man, it must've sucked for Michael Trucco to be hairless and dying comatose in a vat of goo. Poor guy. Even though as a Kara/Lee shipper I instinctively don't like Sam, I fucking love Michael Trucco. He's pretty.

++ Wait, so the lawyer guy is president and Hoshi is the Admiral? Whaaaaaaaat.

++ Okay, no way could an old rust bucket ship like Galactica take such a beating like that.

++ Gah, the shaky camera stuff gives me vertigo.

++ Oooh, not so bad!Boomer stops Simon (was that his name?) from experimenting on Hera!

++ Awwww, she owed him one.

++ Oh God, Helo can't die!!!

++ Are we finally gonna get the payoff from the Opera House dream?

++ Oh hey there, I'm actually kind of starting to like Baltar. Just a little. Don’t tell anyone.

++ So wait, the war's over? Just like that? Whoa!

++ Oh shit, Tyrol's choking Tory and all hell broke loose and Cavil shot himself, what the frak.

++ "What does scare you?" "Being forgotten". Oh!

++ Dude, Galactica's falling the fuck apart!

++ OMG, did they find the real Earth? OH YAY!!!!! But there's still 35 minutes left of the episode, so who knows.

++ Hey, Cavemen!

++ Wait, she's done here? Wha huh?

++ Gaaaaaaaaaah, they almost had the sex and then Zac had to wake up. Blah.

++ Wait, where'd Kara go?!? KARA COME BACK WTF.

++ Laura Roslin FINALLY FUCKING DIED and I'm way sadder than I should be. Awwww, Adama put his wedding ring on her finger! ::weeps::

++ Hey there it's Ron Moore! Clever!

++ Ahahaha "All Along The Watchtower"! And they're building robots and this will all happen again, etc.

++ So wait, that's the end?!? But so much stuff is unresolved! What the frak happened to Kara? I'M SO CONFUZZLED.

Okay, let me explain something: I was sorta spoiled for the ending because a couple weeks ago, I went to Katee Sackhoff's website and on the front page there's a thing that says what she thinks happened in the BSG finale - something along the lines of "I think they're both dead and now she's in heaven playing pyramid with Michael Trucco". So I knew something happened to Kara at the end, and I knew Kara & Lee wouldn't be together. But I didn't know exactly how it was gonna go down, and basically now I'm left with this feeling of "WHAT THE FRAK?!?" Because the show doesn't explicitly explain what happens to Kara, like if she was dead & appearing as an angel, or whatever. And they don't explain what really happens to Sam either.

Obviously, in my world Sam died and Kara didn't, and she and Lee got married and had dozens of little Earth babies and lived Happily Ever After. But I've noticed that most of the Kara/Lee fic that exists was written prior to 2008, aka prior to Season 4.5, so maybe I'm in the extreme minority here. But, you know, if I can come out of Buffy and AtS canon and still stubbornly read a billion Spuffy fics where everything magically worked out, I'm not going to be deterred by BSG canon. In the words of an icon I saw recently, "Sometimes you just gotta say, FUCK CANON"!

I can't believe it's all over. ::sniffs:: But, there's always fanfic. SO MUCH FANFIC!!!! ::rejoices::

++ I would like to point out that I've been reading Kara/Lee fic for less than 2 months and I already have over 40 bookmarks for this pairing in del.icio.us. That's fucking ridiculous. It took me like a year to accumulate that many bookmarks in some of my fandoms.

++ I have downloaded the last 2 eps of Season 4.5, and am planning to watch them tonight. I almost don't want to, because then the show will be over forever. But, on the plus side, now I can start reading fics for after the series is over. Even though Katee Sackhoff's website spoiled me for what happens to her character in the end, I still wanna know everything.

++ outoftime told me to stop bashing Sam, so my solution is to read Lee/Kara/Sam porn. This was my solution to the Bangel/Spuffy shipper wars too - just get all three characters to fall into bed together, and everyone's happy! somewhereapart linked me to 2 good fics to get me started: Bona Fiscalia by becisvolatile and Worth It by dianora2 (which is my favorite). Any other fic recs would be most appreciated!

++ In non-BSG news, swsa asks: Did Buffy start the whole "human AU" trend in fanfic? That's where I first remember seeing it. She also asks:

Is the reverse true for non-genre fandoms? Is there Glee fic out there where everyone's a vampire and Rachel's the Slayer? Gossip Girl fic where Blair and Serena are witches and in love?

Oh man, I don't even watch Gossip Girl but I would *so* read that fic.

++ cleolinda wrote New Moon in Fifteen Minutes. Eeeee. I still haven't seen it, but I'm hoping to tomorrow. As soon as I do, I'm all over that post.

++ In other news, for some reason that I simply cannot fathom, I'm reading the Left Behind books. I've actually just finished the 4th one, and have started the 5th. These books are the most ridiculous fucking things I have ever read and yet I CANNOT PUT THEM DOWN. It kind of hurts my brain a little. Maybe I'm a closet evangelist or something? At any rate, when I'm done with this book I'm going to do a post all about how much they suck, and yet how I still can't stop reading them. Obviously Jerry B Jenkins put some kind of Jesus crack in the page or something.

++ Finally, this icon makes me laugh way more than is probably appropriate for a silly little joke. Oh well.

So, I'm almost done with BSG Season 4.5 - I've finished discs 1-3, and disc 4 will be coming via Netflix soon. Not that I'll wait that long - I'm dling the eps now as I type - but, anyways.

Disjointed thoughts on the eps in no particular order

++ So Earth is a bust, huh? Nuked 2,000 years ago.... and the whole Thirteenth Tribe was all Cylons. Or something. Okay, obviously I have to rewatch these episodes a bunch of times, because exposition and stuff happens so fast that I can't absorb everything.

++ Kara died, except somehow not. And she freaked out Leoben! That was awesome.

++ Ellen's the final Cylon? I totally thought it would've been like, Billy or Adama or someone.

++ Roslin is all fucked up, and SHE'S STILL DYING GOOD LORD. If she's not really trufax dead by the end of the series, I'm demanding a refund.

++ Yaaaaaaaaay, Roslin and Adama finally had the sexxing. That was sweet.

++ The mutiny episode was my favorite of the season so far. Oh man, Gaeta, what the fuck. He was a total dick towards the end - I couldn't believe he did that shit. And Zarek, OMG! He just ordered the whole Quorum shot like it was nothing. Cold, cold blooded.

++ Eeeeee, Kara kissed Lee again and yes, once again it was hot. I love them like that - working together, pointing guns at shit and shooting people and then MWAH KISSY FACE and obviously at some point during the mutiny they slipped off to a broom closet somewhere and frakked each other's brains out, right? PLZ TELL ME THIS IS FICCED SOMEWHERE.

++ Blah blah blah, Sam gets shot. I'm sad because Kara is sad, but secretly I'm like "Plz be dead now so you can go the frak away and Kara & Lee can get together for reals?" I'M A HORRIBLE PERSON.

++ I know Adama had to do it, but I was still sad when they killed Gaeta. Zarek, not so much - he's a total dick. But Gaeta, I really liked him. Wasn't he canonically gay? Like, it was revealed in a webisode somewhere along the lines? I need clarification here.

++ Okay, all the stuff with Ellen and Cavil on the Baseship just confused the fuck out of me. And wait, she's the creator? She's like the mom - and she fucked Cavil, who she created?!? Whaaaaaaaat.

++ Cylon model #7 - Daniel? What the fuck, there's ANOTHER? See, this is what I mean about how this show confuses the hell out of me and I need to watch shit two or three times, preferably with the audio commentary, to really get it. This is obviously Ron Moore's evil plot to get me to buy all the DVD sets instead of just dling the eps or renting the DVDs from Netflix. RON MOORE WANTS ME TO BE BROKE WTF.

++ See, Kara, if Sam is brain dead you can't feel guilty about divorcing him and marrying Lee instead. I'm telling you, TERRIBLE PERSON.

++ Okay, Ellen is a raging bitch for what all she does to Caprica Six. Wow.

++ OMG, she lost the baby! His name was Liam!!!! Oh, how this show breaks my heart. I'm like, ready to cry right now.

++ Mmmm, wet!Katee Sackhoff in the shower. I think I need to rewatch that a couple times... to better understand the plotlines. Yes.

++ Cylons can project? Coolness!

++ Oh! The Chief/Boomer projection was so sweet. Man, they're totally gonna kill her aren't they.

++ Oh God, was the song Kara's dad taught her to play "All Along The Watchtower"?

++ Kara has Daddy Issues! Big surprise there.

++ Oh snap, evil!Sharon is fucking Helo while good!Sharon is tied up and watching. That is so wrong. FUCKING HOT, but wrong.

++ It *is* "All Along The Watchtower"! What the frak?

++ Wait, was that her father? Was he an angel? Was he ever even there? SO CONFUSED.

++ Ahahaha, Athena started hitting Helo. Damn straight.

++ Chief, Boomer played you like a fool.

++ Hey look, Roslin's still not dead!

++ Wow, Galactica's really falling apart, huh? Like, crumbling under Adama's feet. Awwww, I'm kinda sad.

++ Hey, "Directed by Edward James Olmos"! Go Eddie!

++ Oh hey there, Sam came alive! But he's... connected to the ship.... somehow? I'm so confuzzled.

++ Medicinal not!weed! To help her pain as she not!dies.

++ Oh, Helo breaks my heart.

++ "I'm Lee and you're Kara and that's all that matters" - or something to that effect. Awwwwww. They totally should've kissed right there. AGAIN GET ME THE FIC.

++ They're abandoning Galactica! Awwww.

I can't believe I'm almost done with the series! This is so sad.

I'm watching a movie called Pathfinder, which is pretty terrible so far... BUT, it's got Karl Urban in a loincloth. So, that's pretty much always a win.

In other news, I now have a cold in addition to having a chipped tooth. Obviously, I have pissed off the health gods this year - it's been just one thing after another.

In BSG news:

++ I finished discs 2 and 3 of Season 4.5 - I'll have thoughts up later. Suffice it to say, this show loves breaking my heart.

++ I've been like, mainlining Kara/Lee fics. I think in my del.icio.us I already have 20 fics bookmarked. I'm working on a recs post, because you know I love doing those. Look for that in a couple weeks.

Totally OT, but you know I've also been working on a bandslash Jon/Spencer fic recs post for like, a million years. But now that the band has broken up, is it kind of stupid to do a recs post for a pairing that's no longer even in the same band? I dunno. But, I still like reading fics for them.

Man, this movie is awful. But, KARL URBAN IN A LOINCLOTH. I will suffer anything for that.

I need to see Star Trek again, because that's a movie he's in that's actually good. Have you noticed he likes to do lots of shitty movies? I mean, Doom? That fucking Ghost Ship movie? Gaaaaaaaaaah. He's way too pretty to be in such crap.

This was a question earlier in the week, but I just now saw it. For me, the answer is simple: Pink Floyd's "The Dark Side of the Moon". There's just so much going on in that album! I can't even begin to say how many thousands of times I've listened to it, and I get a different experience every time. It's not even my favorite album ever - that's probably either "Nevermind" by Nirvana or "Rio" by Duran Duran - but it's an album that I can listen to repeatedly and never get sick of.

In other news, I watched the first disc of Season 4.5 of BSG.... hmmm. I'll have thoughts later. But I'm absolutely DEVOURING fic. I've already got 18 bookmarks in my Kara/Lee tag on del.icio.us.
Yet Another BSG Post

I watched discs 3 & 4 of BSG Season 4.0 in about, oh, 2 days, because (a) I'm obsessed and (B) I'm procrastinating writing a paper. Bad Luna, bad! At any rate, here's my thoughts as I watched the episodes:

++ I don't like Sam purely because I'm a Kara/Lee shipper, but that scene where Kara's like, "All I wanna do is frak" and they tear into each other? HOT. So so hot. Somewhere, someone has to have written an NC-17 fic which fills in the blanks for that scene, right? ::makes grabby hands::

++ Most of the stuff on The Demetrius, having to watch all the people mutiny against Starbuck, was just depressing. I don't like to see Starbuck hated on like that.

++ Gaeta lost a leg! Gah!

++ Oh snap, Colonel Tigh knocked up Caprica Six! Okay, this is hurting my brain. Cylon/human babies is hard enough to explain, but Cylon/Cylon babies? I just don't get it! Also, if Caprica Six has a baby, is she gonna stop wanting to steal away Hera? And aww, poor Sharon for having to find Hera's coloring book full of "Six Six Six Six" and blonde stick figure ladies. I probably would've shot Six too.

++ Eeeee, Lee is President! And yeah, I totally saw that coming. From the minute he said "let's form an exploratory committee to find the right candidate" or whatever, I knew it was gonna be Lee. Mmmmm, President McHottie.

++ Awwww, Bill Adama looooooooooves Laura Roslin. And I cannot believe he gave up Admiralship (or whatever it's called) to Colonel Tigh. Gah, idiots!

++ I am so sick of Roslin dying. She's been dying for like 80 episodes or something! It reminds me of the first season of Lost when Claire was pregnant for like, 30 trimesters. It's not that I want to see Mary McDonnell go, because she's awesome, but I'm seriously watching going JUST DIE ALREADY, FUCK.

++ Yay, they brought Lucy Lawless back! Now I'm in the mood to watch some old Xena dvds.

++ Is Baltar really dead this time? No, guess not. Frak.

++ "I love you." "'Bout time". Oh! I totally went SQUEE. I've been wanting those two together almost as long as I've been shipping Lee & Kara.

++ Okay, this show moves so fast and so confusingly that I can't keep track of what the frak's going on.

++ When Admiral Adama found out Tigh was a Cylon and started going crazy, my heart just about broke. And I wondered that too, how to explain Tigh aging over the years. It doesn't make any sense because then why don't they resurrect as babies or whatever?

++ So they found Earth, but it's all fucked up. I knew it couldn't be that easy.

++ You know, everytime I see Hot Dog on screen, I think of Pete Wentz. He kind of looks like him doesn't he?

I gotta say, the bonus features for Season 4.0 are so, so much better than for earlier seasons. I loved that video diary where Katee said, "Baltar's got a harem? Like that guy needs to get laid more!" Heeeeee.

    <lj:music>Sade - The Sweetest Taboo</lj:music>

So, I tore through the first two discs of Season 4.0.

"Razor" was... interesting. I watched just the unrated version, and man was it violent! I mean, that stuff where young Bill Adama goes into that like... lab thinger where they're making human/Cylon hybrids? With the stretched out body parts hanging all over the place? I seriously thought I was going to throw up. You have to remember, I really can't handle gore.

That Admiral chick - who was that again? - was kind of scary, wasn't she? I'm glad Caprica Six blew her away.

I liked the Shaw character (I forgot her first name), and was kind of sad that she got killed at the end. Oh well.

Oooooh, prophetic! Kara is going to LEAD US ALL TO OUR DOOOOOOOOM! Whatever, she's way too pretty to be evil.

As for the other four episodes on disc 2:

++ Oh gods, Baltar is a diety now. ::massive eyeroll:: I don't know how much of that shit I can take.

++ Did you see that part where Caprica Six pulled him up and to everyone else he seemed to be pulled up by invisible strings? What exactly does that mean? Like, is Caprica Six really there and everyone else just can't see her? Hmmmm.

++ My heart was breaking for Kara when she was going crazy from jumping away from Earth. I kind of wanted to jump into the screen and give her a big hug.

++ Eeeeee, Kara and Lee kissed. And it was HOT! Come on, she was way more into that kiss than she's ever into frakking her actual Cylon husband. I get the impression that she still cares for Sam, but mostly she's just using him to get the physical release of a quick orgasm. Which proves once again how MASSIVELY FUCKED UP Kara is, but there you go.

++ I was all sad when Lee left being a pilot. He looks so hot in that flight suit! Why yes, I really am that shallow and pathetic. But, I've discovered he looks equally hot in a blue pinstripe suit. So it's all good.

++ So Roslin is dying again... why don't they just re-inject her with Hera's blood or whatever like they did last time? Maybe I'm missing something here.

++ Oh shiznits, Tory killed Cally! That was COLD. I guess she's really an evil Cylon... does that mean that Sam, Tyrol and Tigh are evil too, and they're just waiting for the right trigger to do something fucked up? Like sleeper agents or something? It's crazy.

++ I want to give not-Chief-anymore Tyrol a hug too. Poor fucked up Cylon guy.

In other news, GOOD GOD Firefox is being slow. Like, slooooooooooooooooooooow. This happens far more often than it should. What's going on here?

Okay, I finally finished season 3 of Battlestar Galactica. As you might expect, I have thoughts.

Heh, lucky yous. In no particular order:

HOLY CRAP COLONEL TIGH, SAM, CHEIF TYROL AND THAT OTHER CHICK ARE CYLONS. Whaaaaaaaaaaat. I so did not fucking see that coming. When they all got together in that room, around that square (what was THAT all about anyways) I just knew, CYLONS. And then I was like o.0?!? I was reminded of that BSG Robot Chicken sketch that went something like this:

Seth Green: I wanna be a writer on Battlestar Galactica!

Ron Moore: What's there to write? I just put names on a dart board, throw a dart and whichever name it lands on I go, "Cylon!"

Hee. But no, seriously, doesn't it seem like that sometimes, that the writers just completely pull who's going to be a Cylon out of their asses? I mean, Colonel Tigh. Where the fuck did that come from? He hates the Cylons! And he was tortured by them! They ripped out his eye and showed it to him like a hard boiled egg. COME ON! And Chief Tyrol? That means, unless Cally is the final Cylon (DON'T TELL ME!) that little Nicky is the second Cylon/Human hybrid baby, and then Hera really isn't as special as we've been led to believe.

Which, BTW, how is it possible for humans and Cylons to reproduce together? How the fuck does that even work? I really want the writers to try and explain that one.

Also, I loved the use of "All Along The Watchtower" in that episode. When they said the first line There must be some kind of a way out of here I started singing the entire song to myself. Now, again, the writers need to explain to me exactly how Cylons know a Jimi Hendrix/Bob Dylan song. I'M WAITING, WRITERS.

Anyways, more thoughts:

I can't believe Baltar got off. I just want to smush his face in. I mean, I get that he's a tragic antihero or some shit, but mostly, he just annoys the fuck out of me.

I never for even a SECOND thought Kara was dead. Not even a second! Why was I so confident? Well, for one, I've seen Katee on the cover of the Season 4 DVDs. Also, no way are they killing the prettiest person on the show. Not like that.

So, okay, Dee left Lee? Oh God, "Dee" and "Lee", it's just a little too cute. Kind of like Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz, or Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner. ANYWAYS, so is Dee out of the picture? And Sam is a Cylon, plus he's fucking that other Cylon chick (the President's assistant type person), and Kara isn't dead after all, so CAN STARBUCK AND APOLLO FINALLY GET TOGETHER PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD?!? I know, I'm pathetic. But I've been wanting those two together since the beginning of the series. I know I didn't have to watch it play out over 3 years like the rest of you guys, but I’ve still had to make my way through all these 60 or so episodes going, “Please have sex and get married and have lots of little blonde blue eyed space babies and put me out of my shipper misery?” And then they finally *did* have sex, and they said they loved each other, but then Starbuck went and MARRIED SOMEONE ELSE and good Lord, do these writers know how to break my heart or what?

As I write this, I realize my entire flist already knows how the series ends, and whether Kara and Lee get together for reals or not. And I’m begging you please, DO NOT TELL ME. I’ve already got Season 4.0 and 4.5 in my Netflix queue, and disc 1 should be arriving soon, and I should be able to find out for myself. The thing is though, usually, I’m such a spoiler whore. Like, I was totally spoiled when I went into Farscape. I knew major plotlines and which characters were gonna die like, before I saw the third episode. With this show, I really don’t want to know stuff before I watch the actual episodes. But it’s hard! I keep wanting to go to Wikipedia articles and episode synopsis sites, etc. I’ve got to be strong!

Hmmm, was there anything else about Season 3 I wanted to talk about? I can’t even remember.

Oh yeah, I remember: does the series end with Season 4.5, or are there more episodes? I seem to remember the series ending this year, so that would tell me there’s at least another season. IDEK. It’s so confusing. I still don’t know what’s up with having the half seasons either, except that SciFi wants to make more money packaging the DVDs separately. Or something.

I just checked my email and Netflix has informed me that disc 1 of Season 4 ("The Razor" - a miniseries or something?) is not coming until Thursday. I don't know if I can wait that long. Eeeeeeeeee. ::twitches::

Oh, I know what I'm gonna do: I'm gonna read the third Left Behind book, just to spite txvoodoo. <lj:music>DC Talk - Jesus Freak</lj:music>

I've been talking about religion so much on this blog, maybe I should rename it like... I dunno... Holy Escapism or something. Yeah, maybe not.

First thing: I went to a Catholic Mass like I've been meaning to do since the beginning of the semester. I was really... INTERESTING. No, for serious. The biggest thing I came away with was, Catholics must really really like standing and sitting, sitting and kneeling, kneeling and standing, etc etc OVER AND OVER AGAIN GOOD LORD. Throughout the entire service, which lasted almost exactly one hour, I must have kneeled, stood up and sat back down again like 15 times. It was crazy! The other thing that I noticed was that there wasn't really a sermon per se, like I'm used to in Protestant and Unitarian services. The mass went something like: announcements, hymns, priest talking, hymns, readings where the congregation said stuff back to the priest, hymns, a short story from the priest about how ancient Christians were persecuted, hymns, pass the collection plate while we sing hymns, communion while we sing hymns, priest says some more stuff, the congregation says the Nicean Creed ("We believe in one God", etc), hymns, more hymns, congregation says The Lord's Prayer, priest talks again, the end.

Other things that I noticed: there was a big fountain of holy water at the front of the.... room? in the church where we had the Mass, and everyone who walked past it dipped their fingers in it. Also, when people came into the room and got ready to sit down, they kneeled slighly and made the sign of the cross in the direction of the MASSIVE crucifix behind the alter. I've never seen that before. Also, in the lobby of the church, there were bulletin boards and pamphlets about all sorts of things. Some stuff I expected - a big board announcing anti-abortion protests, along with pamphlets talking about a "recovery from abortion" retreat women could go to - but there was some other stuff too, like pamphlets on how to quit smoking, and how to be tolerant of other religions. Very cool.

Second thing: I've finished reading The Unlikely Disciple, about the Brown University student who goes "undercover" and spends a semester at the ultra conservative evangelical Liberty University. It was a fascinating book, and I highly recommend it to everyone.

Random observations from the book:

++ The author, Kevin Roose, was perfect for being a polar opposite of the typical Liberty student. For example, he's from a "crunchy" liberal college town, his parents are ultraliberals (his father keeps a "Buy Blue" list in his wallet), he grew up in a (largely non-observant) Quaker household, and he goes to Brown, which is apparently a very liberal Ivy League school in Rhode Island. (I didn't know much about Brown when I started this book, other than the fact that it's a very prestigious school that's hard to get into.) Roose calls himself a pacifist and talks about how his circle of friends includes atheists & agnostics, Jews and Buddhists, as well as lots of gay people. When he gets to Liberty, it's a huge culture shock.

++ Kevin Roose spent his semester at Liberty in spring 2007, when a lot of stuff happened at Liberty - namely, the Virginia Tech shooting (VT is about an hour away from Liberty) and the death of Jerry Falwell. These events make the book more poignant and interesting (not that the VT shooting was interesting, but you know what I'm trying to say) than if he had come to Liberty during any other semester.

++ Liberty is very much a cult of personality towards Jerry Falwell. The place like, totally worships him. It's really kind of disturbing. There's even a Jerry Falwell Museum on campus - this was erected BEFORE HE DIED.

++ Liberty has a 40 something page code of conduct called "The Liberty Way" which is just fascinating. I couldn't believe how detailed it was. Like, there's no touching other than hand-holding and hugging - and you can only hug for a maximum of 3 seconds. When people hug, do others stand around them going "One Mississippi, two Mississippi, three Mississippi - SEPERATE!!!" Hee. Also, when you break any of the rules in The Liberty Way, you get "reprimands" and have to pay a fine. So like if you watch an R rated movie it's like 10 reprimands and a $25 fine. (I don't remember the exact numbers, but whatever.) And if you drink alcohol, you can get kicked out. It's hardcore.

++ Liberty students are like, INSANELY homophobic. Well, I don't know if they're *all* that way, but from the vocabulary of some of the guys Kevin Roose talks about, quite a few are. People in his dorm are constantly saying stuff like "shut up queer" or "don't be such a faggot". The worst guy is one of Kevin's roommates, a very strange 29 year old Kevin calls "Henry" who talks about wanting to bash in gay people's skull with a baseball bat. It's really quite upsetting.

There's a kind of "gay reparative therapy" pastor/counselor at Liberty, who Kevin goes to visit. This pastor is shown as being kind and genuinely caring about his gay students.... except, you know, for the part where he's telling them they need to change in order to live according to God. Also, there's a part in the book where one of Kevin's Liberty friends discovers his perfect Christian girlfriend is bisexual. Eventually they pray together and study the Bible enough so that somehow, magically, she's no longer bisexual. Sheyah, right. Either the girl was never really bi to begin with or she's lying to him. Because really, if you could "pray away the gay", I would've been made straight when I was 14 and desperately praying to God to make me stop looking down the shirt of that girl in 4th period Algebra.

++ Liberty teaches creationism. I don't understand how a school can teach creationism as fact and still keep its accreditation. When I hear people say they don't believe in evolution, to me that's like saying "I don't believe in gravity". I just can't wrap my mind around it. What was really interesting was that one of Kevin's Liberty professors was a real live, peer review published scientist who does some kind of compartmentalizing wherein when he's writing science journal stuff, he talks about 65 million year old dinosaurs, but when he teaches at Liberty, he believes the world is only 6,000 years old. How does someone even do that? It gives me a headache just thinking about it.

++ Kevin got the last print interview of Jerry Falwell's life. It was a total puff piece wherein he asked "how many red ties do you own?" and like, what Falwell's favorite ice cream flavor was or something. Journalistically, it was total junk. But, Liberty loved it and when Falwell died, they put the article in his special museum.

++ This book humanized Jerry Falwell and Liberty students. To me, Jerry Falwell was always just the psycho bigot who said things like AIDS was God's punishment for a society that tolerated homosexuals and that 9/11 was caused by feminists, gay people, abortionists, and pagans. And the thing is, Jerry Falwell *was* the guy who said those things, and who exploited people's fear of differences to make money and gain power. Yet at the same time, Falwell could be kind (he once gave a full 4 year Liberty scholorship to a kid who knocked a baseball over his fence, he visited sick parisoners in the hospital, etc), and he loved a good practical joke. He was a real person who was deeply flawed, but he wasn't all evil like I've always thought.

++ Overall, it was a fascinating glimpse into a world which I know very little about. And while it makes me never want to set foot on a Liberty campus, it still makes me kind of want to do their online program. Although I can't imagine how I would choke through a course on creationism.

Something I haven't told you all: I actually submitted my NVCC transcript to Liberty for an "unofficial transcript consultation". They wrote me back:

Marie,

I have reviewed your credits from Northern Virginia Community College. This is only an unofficial evaluation and may change once your official transcripts have been evaluated. Guarantees of transfer credit are not made during the unofficial evaluation process, and this document should not be used for registration purposes.

Based on your unofficial transfer credit, you can anticipate taking the following courses to complete the AA Psychology degree program:

Math Elective (College Math, MATH 115, or higher)
Contemporary Worldviews
Natural Science Elective
Philosophy and Contemporary Ideas
Survey of Biblical Literature
Introduction to Christian Thought
Developmental Psychology
Psychology of Childhood
Psychology of Adolescence or Psychology of Adulthood
Psychology of Personality
Two (2) Psychology Elective Courses

You need about 12 courses to finish this degree.

Currently, at NVCC, I am about 6 courses away from completing my AA. So if I went to Liberty I would have to take twice as many classes just to get my AA. Lame! I didn't ask how many courses I need to complete a Bachelor's, which is what I'm eventually going for of course.

I did something very different for me in this post. Or rather, I *didn't* do something. First person to guess gets a free cookie. :)

Of the good:

++ Saturday I found an old SmarTrip card (which is the card you put money on for the Metro or the bus) hidden in a drawer somewhere and discovered it had $31 on it. Score!!!

++ Sunday I bought a scratch off lotto ticket, which I *never* do, and I won $10! Sweeeeet! I still kind of think gambling is a sin (I know, very Biblical of me) but hey, TEN DOLLARS!!!

++ The pest control guy came out on Friday and I think alll the bees are gone from my room. Yay!!!

++ My Sociology class was cancelled today, and it's allowing me to work on my essay which is due Wednesday. Rock!

Of the bad:

++ I'm running into walls trying to do this actual essay. It's a short one, like just a page, so you wouldn't think it would be that big of a deal. What I have to do find a peer reviewed journal article about any topic in sociology and analyze it. I chose to do it on the subject of affirmative action. You'd think with such a hot button topic there'd be tons of articles, but there's really not. Or, rather, there's really not that many PEER REVIEWED articles. There's tons of "this is my opinion" type pieces, but that's not what I need.

BTW, I've actually had 2 whole weeks to do this essay, but I've procrastinated until... oh yeah, the essay is due WEDNESDAY. Gah!!! I suck.

In other news, I just quickly have to say that I've watched the first three discs of Season 3 of Battlestar Galactica and

++ First off, I'm totally disoriented by how the show skipped a whole year. All this shit happened! Everyone got married, some people had babies, etc etc. As I go through the series it's helping how there's flashbacks, but it's still a jolt.

++ Second, I loved the stuff on New Caprica. Not that I wanted the characters to be occupied, but I wish that whole thing could've gone on longer. It was cool to see everyone as Resistance Fighters, or whatever they were called.

++ I still hate Baltar. Like, more than ever.

++ I bet Casey (or whatever her name was) is still really Kara's daughter. We'll see.

++ Lucy Lawless makes a kick ass Cylon, does she not?

++ And the most important thing: OMG LEE AND KARA FINALLY HAD SEX OMG YAY, except, GAH BREAK MY HEART WHY DON'T YOU. How could she DO that shit? But, it's like whoever (Ron Moore?) said in the commentary for the extended version of "Unfinished Business", Kara is just plain fucked up. She can't deal with stuff, so she goes out and fucks everything all up.

But that scene in the boxing ring, when they're just holding each other saying "I missed you/ I missed you too"? Oh, my heart literally fluttered. Well, maybe not literally. But it wanted to!

I am such a Lee/Kara shipper, it's not even funny. I want to go out and find fanfic for the pairing, but I haven't seen the rest of the series and I'm afraid of spoilers. But there's got to be some Lee/Kara season 3 shipper fanvids out there. Hmmm, this calls for research.

I still can't believe I don't have a single BSG icon. You know what would be cool? An icon that says "Frak, Frell, Fuck - It all works for me". Or something to that effect. Heh.

Questions That Keep Me Up at Three in the Morning

Sometimes completely random questions float through my brain. This usually happens in the middle of the night, or when I'm sitting on the bus staring into space, etc. So last night when I had bad insomnia, I wrote some of these questions down and now I'm going to look them up on the internet, and post the answers for my own personal edification. Yay!

1. Why does the sky appear to be blue? - I know the sky isn't actually blue, but I always wondered why it looks like that. I'm sure this question was answered in eigth grade science class, but I totally forgot.

Answer: Okay, it's more complicated than I could state, but it has to do with light scattering when it passes through particles that are much smaller than the wavelength or color of light, and also because in sunlight the color blue is scattered better than the other colors. So it has something to do with the sun and scattering light. Yeah, I dunno. But HowStuffWorks explains it pretty good and so does this site.

2. When is Doctor Who coming back? - Supposedly there's going to be a special in November called The Waters of Mars, and there's going to be a Christmas special, in which (I think?) Matt Smith will take over as the 11th Doctor. And then the show will continue in Spring 2010. Right?

3. What exactly does being Kosher entail? - There's a really good article on this at Judaism 101. Also Wikipedia.

4. Does a bee die when it stings you? - Obviously I'm interested in this because I've gotten stung twice in the past week. The answer is, yes, if it's a honeybee. Which I'm pretty sure is what stung me. So, HAHAHAHAHAHA, YOU'RE DEAD NOW STUPID BEE.

5. How deep is the ocean? - according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration the average depth of the ocean is 14,000 feet. The deepest part is called the Challenger Deep, and that's approximately 36,200 feet. Which is like 69 miles, if I'm reading this conversion chart right.

6. How many LJ posts have I made over nearly 7 years? - 3,404. Whoa!

7. How many Nightmare on Elm Street movies have been made? According to Wikipedia there have been 6 in the straight franchise, 1 meta movie featuring the real actors (Wes Craven's New Nightmare), and 1 mashup (Freddy vs Jason). Also, they're doing a reboot in 2010, which I'm a little wary about.

Also, the films have collectively made about $340 million worldwide. Score!

++ I got stung by a bee, on my leg, last night as I was getting into bed. (Yes, there was a bee in my blanket. Don't ask how the hell it got in there.) It didn't hurt as much as I remember it hurting when I got stung as a kid, but it's still ouchy. And the area where I got stung is all red and splotchy now. Bleh.

++ I got my Sociology midterm back, and I did better than I thought I did - 16 out of 20 points. What's that, a C? A B?
Hey y'all, I sucked it up and bought the super special mega 70th anniversary edition of Wizard of Oz in a moment of weakness. It was like $24 off at Amazon, and I couldn't resist. But, now I have an extra copy. So I'm gonna try and sell it.

I'm selling this version, the 2 disc one, for $10 plus $3 shipping. It retails for $24.99 - I got it for $19.99 at Best Buy - so $10 is a good deal. It's brand new - opened, but only watched one time. I'll ship anywhere in the US or Canada for $3... if you live in another country, comment and I'll get back to you with shipping.

If you're interested in other stuff I have, check out my Swap a DVD list or my Paperback Swap list.

ETA: Has been sold to cathyteach2!

Now as much as half is produced domestically, often by small-scale operators who painstakingly tend greenhouses and indoor gardens to produce the more potent, and expensive, product that consumers now demand, according to authorities and marijuana dealers on both sides of the border.

Weed doesn't do much for me, personally. I can count on two hands the number of times I've actually smoked it in my lifetime. But I am definitely someone who thinks it should be legalized. Sell it legally, tax the shit out of it, and use the revenue for schools, roads, and more police to actually fight real drugs like crack and meth.

Not that I'm saying marijuana is like, a great thing. It makes you incredibly stupid and lazy. But whatever, people are going to do it anyways. And it helps cancer patients and people dying of AIDS, so how can that be a bad thing?

I'd much rather cigarettes be illegal, tell the truth.

At any rate, back to the article: it makes me happy that small businesses are cutting into the megacorporations' bottom line. Wouldn't you rather give your weed money to a small mom and pop business than a ruthless, violent drug cartel?

I'm on disc 2 of Season 2.5 of Battlestar Galactica, and just one quick thought: OMG THEY KILLED BILLY! YOU BASTARDS! Heh. No, but seriously, I loved Billy. And he just wanted to marry Dee, and she wouldn't have him. Oh, the drama!

Also, Lee and Kara almost had sex, and I just about cried when they didn't. I want those two together so bad, it's not even funny.

Okay, I'll have more coherent thoughts on the season later.

Also, what is this show "Glee" that has enraptured my entire flist? Please to explain, and maybe pimp to me.

In other news, I had a particularly vivid dream about smoking again last night. It was a dream where I knew it was bad, and I felt guilty over it, but I still smoked. Not sure what these dreams signify, other than the fact that I really, really miss cigarettes. It's been two and a half years, and I still miss smoking. Gah.

In other other news, I'm looking at all the cool Halloween costumes online, and man, I wish I wasn't broke. And that I actually had a place to wear a Halloween costume to. :(

++ Firefox is being a bitch again. I click on it and the page comes up, but then it gets stuck on loading. I'm running Spybot again, maybe that will help.

++ The Redskins lost to like, the worst team in football last night. I mean, we lost to the DETROIT LIONS. How fucking humiliating is that?!? Oh, my poor horrible local team.

++ I'm seeing the general surgeon today, who will tell me whether I need to have my gallbladder removed. I'm kind of nervous. Think happy thoughts for me.

++ stepps did a mega bandslash recs post. Yay!

++ Random drive-by opinion: You know, one of the arguments against gay marriage is that if it's legalized, it will lead to the legalization of polygamy. You know what though? I don't actually have a problem with polygamy. I mean, if two men and a woman really want to get married to each other, I don't really have a problem with it. As long as it's not 12 year olds getting married to FLDS preachers against their will, then, what's really the problem? Hey, if they can figure out a way to combat the jealousy and issues, then good for them.

++ I finally finished season one of True Blood, and I so didn't see Rene/Drew as the killer! That was a cool twist.

I was kind of sad to see Amy get killed off; she was a total junkie but I liked her character all the same.

Jason continues to annoy the shit out of me. I'm not looking forward to his arc in the second season.

Who is Maryann? She can't be good. Anyone who's that nice to people down on their luck is probably evil. In television shows, at least.

Coming soon: thoughts on season 2.5 of Battlestar Galactica.
