This week the New York Times reported a disheartening story about two of the largest retail chains. You see, instead of taking unsold items to sample sales or donating them to people in need, H&M and Wal-Mart have been throwing them out in giant trash bags. And in the case that someone may stumble on these bags and try to keep or re-sell the items, these companies have gone ahead and slashed up garments, cut off the sleeves of coats, and sliced holes in shoes so they are unwearable.
This unsettling discovery was made by graduate student Cynthia Magnus outside the back entrance of H&M on 35th street in New York City. Just a few doors down, she also found hundreds of Wal-Mart tagged items with holes made in them that were dumped by a contractor. On December 7, she spotted 20 bags of clothing outside of H&M including, "gloves with the fingers cut off, warm socks, cute patent leather Mary Jane school shoes, maybe for fourth graders, with the instep cut up with a scissor, men’s jackets, slashed across the body and the arms. The puffy fiber fill was coming out in big white cotton balls.”
The New York Times points out that one-third of the city's population is poor, which makes this behavior not only wasteful and sad, but downright irresponsible. Wal-Mart spokeswoman, Melissa Hill, acted surprised that these items were found, claiming they typically donate all unworn merchandise to charity. When reporters went around the corner from H&M to a collections drop-off for charity organization New York Cares, spokesperson Colleen Farrell said, “We’d be glad to take unworn coats, and companies often send them to us."
After several days of no response from H&M, the company made a statement today, promising to stop destroying the garments at the midtown Manhattan location. They said they will donate the items to charity. H&M spokeswoman Nicole Christie said, "It will not happen again," and that the company would make sure none of the other locations would do so either. Hopefully that's the final word.

So basically the Paley Center for Media is like a museum for TV shows. They have panels like Comic-Con and people get to ask questions after a moderator asks questions about the shows, their developments, the cast, etc etc.
Today, they had a panel that featured the cast of the TV show How I Met Your Mother. People who had tickets got to watch a screening of the 100th episode and ask questions, etc. If you want to read about the highlights of the panel, click here (it's their twitter - they had live updates as the panel was going on).
Every year Paley has a thing called PaleyFest, which features a bunch of panels for hit TV shows. So far, the Paley Center has added these shows to the PaleyFest 2010 line-up: Modern Family, LOST, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Glee, The Vampire Diaries and Dexter. The full line-up will be announced on their website at 01/20/10, so remember to check for that. Member tickets go on sale 01/22/10, and general public tickets go on sale 01/24/10.
In the past, the Paley Center has featured TV shows like House, True Blood, Parks & Recreation, Community, Pushing Daisies, Gossip Girl, Mad Men, Fringe, Big Love, The Hills, 90210, Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Ugly Betty, Monk, and more. To see past videos of these panels, visit their website or their YouTube channel!
Also, Paley Center actually has a location in NY, too, but idk what is happening there.

I went to one of these things for Parks & Recreation and I actually got tickets really late and they ended up being closed-circuit, meaning I had to watch the whole thing in a room. But after it was over they all came out and took pictures and stuff. Aziz was hilarious. I wanted to meet Amy of course but she dodged out of there from the back door I think. Met Paul Schneider, the guy who plays Mark (Ann's boyfriend). He insisted on taking a picture with me and my friend lol. "Cool! I got both of my chins in the picture!"
Next up was "U is for Undertow" by Sue Grafton. I've long loved her Alphabet series, and this one told the story from several viewpoints, some in the 1960s and some in 1988. The last 10 pages were too rushed, but it was a welcome addition to the series. What will Grafton due after she hits Z?

The 'Bachelor' contestant dismissed from the reality show for an alleged affair with a producer insists, "I did not have a sexual relationship with a producer on the show." In an exclusive interview with RadarOnline.com, Rozlyn Papa says that 'The Bachelor' execs fired her for an "inappropriate relationship" with a producer, but "what they mean by inappropriate relationship is not what inappropriate relationship means in the real world."The episode depicting Papa's termination from 'The Bachelor' will air January 11, during the season's second episode, but the 28-year-old model insists that her actions have been exaggerated by the show. "I had a relationship with someone on the show that didn't benefit them," she says of the producers.
"This is a TV show and it's made for entertainment, but it is a far cry from reality," Papa explains. "I know that things on television weren't always as they seemed, but I had no idea the extent of the show manipulation."
Papa is no longer dating the producer, who was also fired, but she claims they have remained close. 'The Bachelor' host Chris Harrison said after the two were fired, "It was an incident that we've never had to deal with before. It was tough for everyone, the crew, the women and Jake. Hopefully we can quickly move past this and it won't dominate the season. But definitely everyone will see what happens."
Harrison continued, "An unfortunate decision was made by one of the girls and one of the crew members and the rest you'll have to watch and see."
Papa disagrees. "I am going to hold my head high, I do not regret anything that happened," she says.

A new study by University of California at Los Angeles professor Raúl Hinojosa-Ojeda suggests that comprehensive immigration reform, which includes an earned path to legalization for undocumented immigrants, could generate at least $1.5 trillion in added U.S. gross domestic product over 10 years. Hinojosa explains the data behind his immense calculation:
All immigrant workers in this scenario have full labor rights, which results in higher wages — and higher worker productivity—for all workers in industries where large numbers of immigrants are employed. As wage and productivity levels rise, the U.S. economy’s demand for new immigrant workers actually declines over time as the market shrinks for easily exploited, low-wage, low-productivity workers. [...]According to Hinojosa, a mass deportation program often cited by right-wing enforcement-only advocates would actually result in a loss of $2.6 trillion over ten years while a solution that only consists of a temporary worker program that labor unions vehemently oppose and some moderate Republicans support would only yield $792 billion increase in GDP and also lead to a decrease in wages.
The higher earning power of newly legalized workers translates into an increase in net personal income of $30 to $36 billion, which would generate $4.5 to $5.4 billion in additional net tax revenue. Moreover, an increase in personal income of this scale would generate consumer spending sufficient to support 750,000 to 900,000 jobs…
In recent days, attention has been turning toward Michael Leiter, director of the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC), in the failed Christmas Day bombing. Politico’s Laura Rozen wrote that it appears that “knives [are] out” for Leiter. On Tuesday, former Bush White House adviser Karl Rove also jumped on the NCTC during an appearance on Fox News, saying that the agency was “where the problem probably occurred”:
VAN SUSTEREN: But somebody had the job, Karl, to coordinate all this information into one center place. I cannot believe that after 9/11, we didn’t figure out that we have to have some sort of central resource –It was surprising that Rove pointed the finger at the NCTC, since Leiter served with him in the Bush administration. Leiter became NCTC director in 2007, and then was retained by the Obama administration. But maybe Rove forgot these details and remembered them only after his Fox News appearance, because today during another Fox interview, he tried to shift blame away from the NCTC:
ROVE: Well, we did. We did. [...]
VAN SUSTEREN: Well, who’s in charge of that?
ROVE: The counterterrorism center is where the problem probably occurred because, look, there are lots of — we know that the State Department passed on the information. We know the CIA received it. We know the counterterrorism center received it.
ROVE: In fact, the biggest problem is not within the NCTC and the intelligence community — Look, I want to say one word of defense for them. There’s a lot of information flowing through there. It seems to me this should have been caught, but there is a lot of information flowing through there, and the expectation that human beings are going to be perfect 100 percent of the time or that the system of computers and algorithms of detection software is going to be perfect 100 percent of the time is just wrong.
In both interviews, Rove insisted that the real problem was with the Obama administration, who decided to “treat the Christmas Day bomber as a criminal defendant” (just like the Bush administration did with the shoe bomber). Watch the two clips:

( Full size sneer under the cut... )
However. On the special edition it has the Director's Cut. And can I just say A WORLD OF ICK TO THAT. I am sure it satisfies some peoples' urge to see the movie taken more...seriously? It has the original score instead of the clearly 80s Tangerine Dream synthisizers. (Which means they CUT OUT "TOUCHED BY THE SUN". BASTARDS.--signed, My Childhood Self.) And the end is supposed to be all ambiguous and meaningful and Lili and Tom Cruise have more talking with each other that is totally boring. And they work harder to show that Lili is a spoiled little brat.
In fact if you listen to the commentary from Ridley Scott (WHICH I DON'T RECOMMEND) you can hear all about his issues with Lili, and possibly women in general. It's hard to tell. Probably the most interesting thing he mentioned was explaining why they dubbed all the lines for Gump, the fairy dude that helps Cruise. Apparently one of the studio guys objected to the actor's German accent, and said they couldn't have a damn Nazi in the movie. ::headdesk::
But I will never be watching the Director's Cut again, because dammit I LIKE not having to wait until the movie is half over to see Darkness for the first time, I LIKE the cheesy 80s soundtrack because it goes with the glitter overload perfectly, and dammit, they don't even show them putting THE DAMN HORN BACK ON THE UNICORN, WTF. And of course "Touched by the Sun." :P

The LAPD investigation into Michael Jackson's death has been completed and the case will go the D.A. within weeks, law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... and, we're told, it's all but certain Dr. Conrad Murray will be criminally charged in MJ's death.
Our sources say detectives completed their investigation late last month and the case will be formally presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney as soon as scheduling allows. Turns out ... the presentation will draw quite the crowd. A number of members of the LAPD and the D.A.'s office will be present, and finding a date when everyone can show is a little tricky ... but we're told it will happen in a matter of weeks.
One very informed source says the LAPD investigation was "exhaustive" and "extremely thorough" and the D.A. has enough evidence to pull the trigger on a criminal case against Dr. Murray. That said, we're told the case is complicated, in part because Dr. Murray did not break any laws in administering Propofol to Jackson.
One law enforcement source connected with the case notes the D.A. has been actively working with the LAPD and it's all but certain the case will be filed. As for the charge -- a decision has not been made, but our sources say the likelihood is involuntary manslaughter, which requires a showing of gross negligence.

NBC to Conan O'Brien -- The Choice Is Yours
NBC has given Conan O'Brien the option to either do his show from midnight to 1 or leave the network, sources tell TMZ.
As TMZ first reported, after the Olympics, Jay Leno will get his 11:30 PM time period back. We're told network execs have told Conan they will let him decide if he wants the midnight to 1:00 AM time slot. If he does, Leno's show will only be a half hour. If Conan walks, Leno will get a full hour, informed sources tell TMZ.
Our sources say Conan has not decided what he wants. We do know he's pissed, because he was given no advanced warning this was coming. Conan's people told NBC they are considering the offer. Translation: Mr. O'Brien -- I have Rupert Murdoch on line one, Stephen McPherson on line two, John Landgraf on line three, Jeff Wachtel on line four ...
We're told if Conan gets another offer, even though NBC could block the move, they will let him go and give Leno the full hour.
Stay tuned ...

“The Hurt Locker” has picked up plenty of high-profile fans over the past year, starting with the critics groups that have named it the best film of the year. At least 140 people were killed in a remote region of south Sudan, a UN official said on Thursday as aid agencies warned of a new civil war on the eve of the anniversary of a fragile peace deal between north and south.
Concern is mounting over stability in Sudan because Africa's largest nation, which is blessed by huge oil resources, faces a crucial political test this year -- its first general election in 24 years.
Ninety people were also wounded in the violence in Wunchuei region of the southern Warrap state over the past week, but the United Nations found out about the clashes only two days ago when a security team visited the area.
"This a matter for deep concern," said Lise Grande, the UN Deputy Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, adding that in addition to the casualties, 300,000 head of cattle were stolen.
UN peacekeepers were on their way to the area to investigate, she said.
The dead were from the Dinka people, and local sources suggested they were killed by a rival Nuer group but this claim could not be immediately confirmed.
The violence reinforced concerns expressed by 10 aid agencies which warned in a report that Sudan could plunge into fresh turmoil if the world community fails to salvage the North-South Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

Fox News contributor Laura Ingraham claimed that "the number one thing [President Obama's] not doing" to fight terrorism "is identifying what the real threat is" and that in his last weekly radio address, Obama cited "a war against violence and hatred," strongly suggesting that Obama has not addressed the threat posed by Al Qaeda. But in the radio address Ingraham cited, Obama repeatedly referred to Al Qaeda as a target of America's efforts abroad, and Obama has repeatedly used the phrase "war on terror."
Ingraham suggests Obama ignored Al Qaeda in response to failed terrorist attack
Ingraham: In his radio address, Obama "said this was a war against violence and hatred." From the January 7 edition of Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor:
INGRAHAM: The number one thing he's not doing, of course, is identifying what the real threat is. He renamed the war on terror, "overseas contingency operations." Janet Napolitano, remember, said that she didn't like calling it the war on terror. She'd prefer to call it manmade disasters, which was disastrous for her to say that. And then, in the radio address on Saturday, Bill, he said this is a war against violence and hatred. Now, first of all, what does that even mean -- a war against violence and hatred? There's a lot of violence in our own country and there's a lot of hatred in our own country. But we're not at war with that. We're at war with a particular type of enemy that frankly is goal-oriented, and their goal is to establish a global Islamic caliphate.
BILL O'REILLY (host): OK, but he did say that today, he did say that, you know, we're at war with Al Qaeda.
INGRAHAM: No, not really.
O'REILLY: And we're going to do whatever it takes to defeat Al Qaeda. Now, I don't believe that for a second.
Obama repeatedly referred to Al Qaeda in radio address. In the radio address Ingraham referred to, Obama cited his inauguration and stated: "I also made it very clear -- our nation is at war against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred, and that we will do whatever it takes to defeat them and defend our country, even as we uphold the values that have always distinguished America among nations." Obama continued:
And make no mistake, that's exactly what we've been doing. It's why I refocused the fight -- bringing to a responsible end the war in Iraq, which had nothing to do with the 9-11 attacks, and dramatically increasing our resources in the region where al Qaeda is actually based, in Afghanistan and Pakistan. It's why I've set a clear and achievable mission -- to disrupt, dismantle and defeat al Qaeda and its extremist allies and prevent their return to either country.
Obama also stated that alleged terrorist Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab "joined an affiliate of al Qaeda, and that this group -- al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula -- trained him, equipped him with those explosives and directed him to attack that plane headed for America." [Presidential Weekly Address, 1/2/10]
Ingraham disagrees with O'Reilly that Obama said "we're at war with Al Qaeda"
Ingraham: Obama did "not really" say "we're at war with Al Qaeda." After O'Reilly stated: "OK, but he did say that today, he did say that, you know, we're at war with Al Qaeda," Ingraham falsely claimed: "No, not really."
Obama: "We are at war against al Qaeda." During his January 7 remarks about the attempted bombing, "Obama stated: "We are at war. We are at war against al Qaeda, a far-reaching network of violence and hatred that attacked us on 9/11, that killed nearly 3,000 innocent people, and that is plotting to strike us again. And we will do whatever it takes to defeat them." [Whitehouse.gov, 1/7/10]

Congratulations! You've been hired by Our Company. We here in HR hope you will have a long and fulfilling career with us.
We notice that you have declined to fill out the EEO (Equal Employment Opportunity) form. While you are well within your rights to do so, we'd like to take this chance to explain something to you. Perhaps you think that by declining to state your ethnicity, you are striking a great blow for equality. Perhaps you are a devotee of the "I don't see color, I see people" philosophy so beloved among IYWPs all over. Perhaps you think you are taking a stand on behalf of the poor, oppressed people of color.
Guess what, snowflake? You're not.
What you are, in fact, doing is making the job of some poor HR drone that much more onerous and annoying. You see, while the government does not require you to fill out this form, it does require us, your employer, to report our EEO statistics. When you leave that sad little neglected form blank, it means that someone who is underpaid and overworked has to try and hunt that information down. If we're lucky, we can get the information from your background check form. If you also declined to fill in the "race" line there, we have to go by visual cues, if we are lucky enough to have seen you and if we're feeling confident in our White Person Detecting Abilities that day.
(And if you put "human" on that line? You're not funny. You're not clever. You're not cute. And you're sure as hell not the first person to have thought of that. Until dolphins begin to walk the land and seek low-paying jobs in the public sector, we can pretty much work under the assumption that you're human without being told.)
Seriously, IYWP, who do you think sees these forms? Are you perhaps under the delusion that we forward them en masse to the KKK, hoping that your forward-thinking ways will change their minds about race? Do you believe that there is, somewhere, a magical tally being kept and when enough white people refuse to call themselves "Caucasian", all racial injustice will end forever? I hate to break it to you, princess, but these forms go into confidential files that nobody, nowhere, will ever look at again. The information itself is anonymous when it's reported, so you're not going to win a Best Honky Ever award. Sorry. What you are going to do is skew the statistics that we have to report, and make our jobs more difficult. Thanks a whole fucking lot.
In conclusion, welcome to Our Company. Take your idealism and either put it to a productive use or stuff it up your three-drawer filing cabinet.
Signed,
The HR Person Who Had to Deal With Way Too Many IYWPs Today
