Whoo Hoo!

This just in.
NEW YORK — Bank of America is nixing its plans to charge a $5 debit card fee.

The news comes after other major banks, including Chase and Wells Fargo, said last week that they were canceling tests of similar fees.

Bank of America had said last week that it would stand by its decision to roll out the $5 monthly fee starting next year.

The about-face by the banking industry comes amid growing public anger over higher fees. A movement to get customers to switch to credit unions and community banks had marked this Saturday as “Bank Transfer Day.”

I don't know the numbers or anything, but I've read places that lots of people were transferring banks in outrage, cutting up their Bank of America debit cards on television, holding up signs at Occupy protests like "BoA got a mutli-billion dollar bailout and all I got was a $5 debit card fee", that sort of thing. I've been talking to customers at Starbucks, when they use their BoA debit cards to pay, "what do you think of this new fee?" and they've all been completely outraged. I've been completely outraged! It's a total racket. You basically have no choice but to use your debit card. Who wants to carry around tons of cash all the time? And what about buying stuff online? That's not just a convenience anymore, that's almost a necessity these days.

Basically, I'm just really, really glad Bank of America has come to their senses. I'm sure it's not because they've suddenly grown a conscience or anything, but because so many customers started leaving or threatened to leave. Whatever the motivation, I'm just glad I won't have to pay this ridiculous fee.

Drive-By Bitching

I saw yesterday that Bank of America - my bank - is going to start charging a $5 a month fee for customers to use their debit cards. My reaction was basically, are you fucking kidding me?!? and it turns out I'm not the only one who feels that way. The article talks about consumer frustration at not just this latest fee, but others like it:
Why such a public backlash over a few extra bucks a month?

Perhaps the bank’s decision simply reminded us all over again that we are living increasingly in a fee-littered world, where companies continually seek out new ways to nibble away at our wallets by charging for the smallest of once-free services, leaving many customers feeling nickel-and-dimed.

“The proliferation of a la carte fees has inundated the economy,” said Ed Mierzwinski, consumer program director for the U.S. Public Interest Research Group. Companies “are inventing new fees; they are making it harder to avoid fees; they are increasing the fees. . . . It’s much more complicated to be a consumer.”

We do seem to have excessive little fees all over the place. This new debit card fee really pisses me off, personally, because they so have us over a barrel. You just about have to use your debit card. I know there's some people who pay for everything with cash, but that's not realistic for most of us. Who wants to carry cash around all the time? What happens if you lose your wallet or get robbed or whatever? All your money's gone. At least if you keep your money on your debit card, it's protected.

Really though, what can we do? I'm not going to switch banks over this. All banks have stupid fucking fees. It sucks everywhere. *epic sigh*

In totally unrelated news, yesterday I was looking through nautibitz's fic journal, nautific. Now, I haven't been active in the Buffy fandom (like, reading fics and stuff) for awhile, so I haven't been to her fic journal for a long time. Which explains why I missed a post from a year and a half ago, where she talked about having been plagiarized for like seriously the 10th time.

I was kind of shocked. See, I'm not a fic writer myself, so I've never had to deal with this kind of bullshit, but I did know it happens. I just didn't really realize how MUCH it happens. There's a whole LJ community (stop_plagiarism) devoted to nothing but stopping fanfic plagiarism, and some of the people who've been victims of this have had it happen dozens of times. Dude!

Have any of you guys ever had a fic plagiarized? What did you do? Did the guilty party actually get in trouble, or did they just go "everyone else does it, why can't I?" I'm honestly curious.

What She Said

From spicklething in this post:
So you're tossing tea and bitching about taxes today.

Don't like takes? Think taxes are socialist? Communist? Antiamerican? You think taxes are pushing some liberal social, baby eating, tree hugging agenda? You don't want to bankroll well fare?

Do you realize taxes pay for more than entitlements?

Okay, then don't use the following if taxes offend you so much you must bitch about them:

Any public road, bridge, highway or freeway.
Municipal, State and national parks.
Public schools and universities.
Medicare. You tell your grandma she can't
Any medical advances developed by the National Institute of Health including medications for cancer and AIDS.
Pell Grants
Municipal water or sewage services
Public transportation not limited to buses, trams, trains, subways, and/or ferries

Honestly, I would probably get along better with James Dobson than I would with Grover Norquist. Taxes are a necessity for societies to work. I mean, of course no one likes paying them, but we need them. We all like having free public school and paved roads.

There's a comic called Prickly City that is written by a conservative, probably a libertarian. A couple years ago on April 15 he did a strip where the main character said something like, "Ah, April 15, the day EVERYONE'S a conservative!" Um, no. Not me. I consider paying taxes to be a patriotic duty. I would gladly, IN A FUCKING HEARTBEAT, pay much higher taxes if we got better social services like free universal health care.

Anyways, yeah. That's just my rant for the day.

Please note: cathyteach2, this post isn't directed at you. Just the general conservative blogosphere today. :)

Money & Donuts

This is so fucking unfair.
Worries over a global recession have pushed the price of oil to its lowest in over a year. Don't expect the same for a bottle of beer, a tube of toothpaste, or a box of cereal.

You can blame "sticky" prices.

That's what analysts call it when companies slap higher prices on products and keep them there even though the rationale for the price hikes — such as soaring oil prices — is gone.

Lame, businesses, very lame. Can someone who understands economics tell me the rationale behind this? Or does it just amount to, "Life (and economics) is unfair, Luna, suck it up".

In other news, today some high school kids were selling Krispy Kreme donuts outside my Metro station. I'm on a diet, but I hadn't had breakfast, so I bought a donut... because I was hungry, and it was for a good cause (they were raising money for new band uniforms or something). But the donut wasn't that great, and totally not worth cheating on my diet for. I'm one of those people that is fiercely loyal to Dunkin' Donuts. I never buy Krispy Kreme unless it's something like a fundraiser or I'm just DESPERATE for sugar. But some people are addicted to Krispy Kreme donuts. Chris Rock did a routine a couple years ago where he said, "If right now I told you Krispy Kremes had crack in 'em, you'd be like 'I knew something was up. These donuts are too damn good, man!'" He then suggested that people would perform fellatio to get a Krispy Kreme donut. o.0

I just don't get it! They're terrible donuts! They use way too much glaze, and they fry them to death. And they don't even have all that many varieties! Dunkin' Donuts, though. Those are awesome. I'm so lucky I don't live next to one anymore. A couple years ago, when I did live next to a Dunkin' Donuts, I stopped by there just about every day. Mmmmm.... convenient donut. (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

I made a poll to see what brand of donuts my flist prefers, and went ahead and put two other options on the poll too. Have fun.
